The Giostra dell’Arme of San Gemini, now in its 51st edition, is a traditional historical event held in the medieval village of San Gemini, Umbria. It is an equestrian re-enactment with roots in the Middle Ages, a period when tournaments and jousting were common. However, this event is part of a broader celebration program that, beyond the sporting aspect, involves the entire town with parades and historical representations. During the Historic Parade, the two city districts, Rione Piazza and Rione Rocca, competed to recreate medieval medicine as faithfully as possible. To highlight this theme through scenes of everyday life from that era, both factions chose to purchase our leeches, which paraded through the city to celebrate its rich medieval past.
